Renew My Heart

"Sometimes happiness comes from being around good friends and family. And the quiet nobility of leading a good life."

The past couple days have been so wonderful! It will be something that always holds a special place in my heart. So much in fact, that I'm learning that not everything is meant to be shared. Sometimes there are moments that are only meant to be shared with the people we experienced it with. That's how I feel about this.  I want to share a few pictures, but I don't want to go into detail about everything that happened like I usually do.

I think I found my "Luke's Diner"!

"Breathe life into these bones
Lord I give you all control
I worship you
You are my King
Renew my mind
Renew my heart
Renew my soul, oh God, I need a brand new start
Forgive my sins
Cleanse me within
Holy Spirit come today
Renew my heart."

As I sat on a rock this morning, taking in God's beauty I heard a couple things that I needed to. I wrote a few notes down and hope they inspire you as well.
  • Always be bold and stand up for what is right. Tell others about Christ and why you live the way you do. I've always been the shy/quiet one, but not anymore. Now when someone asks why I believe what I do, I want to be able to courageously tell them. I want to be able to say it through words, whether it's something I write on my blog, in a story, or whether it's something I sing. I want it to say something about the way I live and what God has done for me.
  • Don't be in such a rush or in such a hurry to get nowhere. Take your time and see what I do along the way! Have faith in me. Be still and know that I am God.
  • Be in the moment; aware of what God is doing. Be content with where you are and believe that God will guide you to each event and point in your life when the time is right.
  • Wake up to whatever it is that is right in front of me...the life I'm meant to be living and awake from what it is that is holding me back. We weren't meant to live comfortable lives, we were meant to live BIG lives for God.
  • 2 Timothy 4:7
  • I Peter 3:15 (a verse Chris gave me at Bible Study on Friday)
  • Fear can stop us in our tracks and Satan uses that against. It is one of the most crippling things from letting us live the lives we were meant to.
That's all for now,

Revised Bucket List

Every once in awhile, it's good to look back at some of the things you've accomplished in life and set new goals for things you still want to work towards. That's exactly what I did this weekend. I started thinking of how I've changed over the past year since I made the last one. So, I thought it was appropriate that I make a new one.
  • See a movie at Mann's Chinese Theater
  • Go swimming with dolphins
  • Try parasailing

And the beautiful thing about Bucket List's are they're ever changing. You can seriously write them down or come up with stuff as you go. The choice is up to you! :) Create a life for yourself that's worth living, that when you're on your deathbed (as morbid as that might sound) you can look back on with no regrets.

I Live For The Little Moments Like That

"Enjoy the little things in life...for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things."

The older I get, the more I start to realize that it's the little things that count. It's not the huge things that have happened in my life that I remember; it's the way it made me feel, the short conversations I had with people...it's the little details that make the most impact.
It's so easy to get caught up in the bad or how things didn't work out the way I'd planned. Now, that I've started working on being more positive it has changed everything for me. I used to think that the best days of my life were automatically when something major happened, like going to a concert, having a celebration, or something really out of the ordinary. But, now those things don't matter so much. It's a text from someone I wasn't expecting, coffee date with a friend, hearing my favorite song on the radio, watching the sunset, nice weather, someone saying a prayer for me, and other things like that that bring a TRUE smile to my face. Knowing that I have the support of my family and friends can't be topped. Those are things that are lasting.

I was reading an old journal entry of mine, when I came across a list I had made of "50 Reasons To Be Happy."It can be a generic idea or something specific that always makes you smile. I want to start doing this at least once a day, where I can list the highlights and find at least ONE good thing about each day. There's a lot to be celebrated and I don't want to miss it just because I might be in a bad mood, it's not worth it.
  1. Being alive-my health
  2. Family and friends that don't give up on me
  3. An unfailing, ever present God will never leave
  4. The talents that God has given me
  5. Music
  6. The beauty of nature
  7. Church family
  8. A bright future to look forward to
  9. Good times I've had in the past
  10. Incredible people I've met
  11. The silver linings of situations
  12. Sun shine
  13. A talk with a best friend
  14. Forgiveness
  15. Knowing I can make a difference in this world
  16. Everything on earth is temporary, someday we'll all be in a much better place
  17. Being who I am. I'm not changing for anyone
  18. Not depending on others for my happiness
  19. Life is an adventure
  20. Love
  21. Knowing one day I'll find my Prince Charming
  22. You are not your mistakes
  23. Flowers
  24. Good food
  25. Small friendly gestures from people you don't know
  26. Marathons with family and friends
  27. The big blue sky
  28. Life in general
  29. The ocean
  30. Things happen, don't dwell on it. Move forward.
  31. Losing yourself in a daydream
  32. The power of my imagination
  33. God's word and the promises He has made us
  34. Hugs
  35. Warm weather
  36. Breathtaking views
  37. Vacations (or at least the idea of them)
  38. Knowing what's important in life
  39. Freedom
  40. Watching my favorite episode of my favorite TV shows
  41. Being included in plans
  42. Knowing the people you can always count on in tough situations
  43. Getting lost in a book
  44. Birthday cards
  45. Capturing that perfect moment in a picture
  46. A cup of coffee or hot tea
  47. A new journal
  48. A comfy sweatshirt
  49. A new dress to wear somewhere special
  50. Quiet time in the morning with God

That's all for now,

Girls, We Have To Believe This!

"Sometimes we're so focused on finding our happy ending we don't learn how to read the signs. How to tell the ones who want us from the ones who don't. Maybe the ending is just moving on. Or maybe the happy ending is this: knowing after all the unreturned phone calls and broken hearts, through the blunders and misread signals, through all the pain and embarrassment...you never gave up hope."

It's so easy to get caught up in the daydream of it all: the idea of having that special someone, the fairytale ending, and everything we've ever seen in chick flicks. Sometimes it doesn't even matter to us who the guy is, it's just about what we'll get from it. So, we end up writing the ending, before we really take a step back and realize that all along the guy that seemed so perfect on paper was not the one for us. And someday, after all of those misses, we'll find our hit. We'll find the guy that was meant just for us. Through it all, we can't give up hope. Hold onto the idea that somewhere in the future you will find your happy ending and everything you went through will make sense, because it led you to that one special moment where everything changed.

This Weekend

Saturday was a really long, emotional day. I woke up around 6 or so, got ready, and once my aunt met at our house we all headed to Fresno. It's about the same distance from here to LA, but I think it usually feels longer because I haven't been there as much. It was nice getting to see new scenery. I haven't seen my aunt in awhile, so it was fun getting to catch up with her.

We got to Fresno a little early, so we drove around to check some things out first, then headed to the cemetery for the graveside. It was good getting to see family members I haven't seen in awhile, but sad that it seems the only time we see each other is for a funeral. The service was lovely; the pastor was so spot on with describing Uncle Bud, I found it crazy that he had never actually met him. I learned so much about faith from everything he said. That didn't last very long, and we went to lunch as a family after that.

We had reservations at this place called, The Manhattan. They even had a special menu that day in honor of Uncle Bud. It was really nice of them! It was decorated very classy and elegant, with old Hollywood pictures all around. It was definitely my kind of place.

We were able to catch up with many family members there. I talked to my mom's cousin and her husband, who are wonderful. I get along with her really well, because she used to work for Creative Artists Agency in LA and did a lot of the type of work I'd like to get into someday. She has worked with a lot of celebrities and has a lot of connections, so it's always fun to hear who she knows, etc. I talked to her husband and he was telling me how his daughter was a journalism major like I am, and how she had started her own website based out of Chicago, where he's from. It's mainly for girls in their 20s, who are getting started at making their mark in this world. I checked it out a little later and thought it was amazing! It's definitely the kind of market I would want to get into. Lunch was really

After that, came the hardest part of the day, I'd say. It was the memorial service at the funeral home. His immediate family (daughter, son, grandchildren, and people he knew from the rescue mission) got up to speak. Each one had me in tears, hearing of how much they loved him and the stories they shared. They also played a slideshow to Carrie Underwood's "Temporary Home". Him and my mom's aunt, Shirley were married 68 years and thinking about how different her life is going to be now that he's gone just really hurt everyone to think about. One, I can't even imagine being married or knowing anyone for that matter, for 68 years, and 2) How do you just pick up and move on after that? They showed me that true love is really out there. They said even in his last few days, every time Aunt Shirley would walk into the room, he'd go on and on about how beautiful she was and what a wonderful wife she had been. I hope to find someone like that.

We went back to my aunt's house after and visited some more with everyone and had more food, which was delicious. All around the house were pictures of Uncle Bud and Aunt Shirley, and even in the midst of everything, you couldn't help but smile. We didn't stay very long, but it was good getting to say hi to everyone.

On our way home we stopped at their Macy's, because it's a lot nicer than ours. They had a lot on sale! While my mom and dad were in the shoe department, my aunt and I did a little exploring of our own. It was fun. We stopped at In-N-Out for dinner and came home, while playing 20 questions! That's always hilarious. Pretty soon, it came to where we were just doing TV shows and movies, which were a lot more fun and challenging anyway.
I though these would be fun hats for the tea party we're planning!
Yesterday morning (Sunday), I was scheduled to sing on the worship team, which when morning came I was really starting to regret. I was feeling exhausted and not feeling so well in general. Not everyone was there on time, practice didn't get started until 7:40 or so, parts weren't coming together easily (we didn't have practice on Thursday), and just all these little things that were making everyone irritated. But, in moments like that you just have to remember the whole reason you're singing in the first place. If the parts aren't there, just sing lead and focus on worship above everything else. First service actually went really well, and it was a lot of fun! And there were no critical comments to go over, so that was a plus :)

I hung out with the band after first service, like I usually do. I messed around with my phone, tried to read a little bit, and just talked to a few people. It's so much fun getting to hear stories about gigs they've played, etc. During the second service, I sat in the audience with my parents. The message was on sex....so, yeah! There was that. Interesting stuff, but it can be awkward at moments. After service, I hung out with a few friends that were volunteering. A couple (Makenzie and Hillary) were selling cake pops, so I talked to them for a few minutes. even about the new "relationship" between Tim Tebow and Taylor Swift. Then, I went into the coffee shop to chat with Febe.  I was really starting to get a bad headache and not feel so great, so I grabbed an ice tea and took medicine. Pretty soon, it was time for the last service of the day! That went really great. The last song really had everyone coming alive and feeling God's presence.

Red velvet! YUM!
My parents surprised me with new jeans! :D
I went to lunch with my parents to a local Mexican restaurant, Mexacali, which was so good! I came home yesterday afternoon and pretty much crashed. I was so exhausted that I took a nap, which I don't do very often. I think the last time I probably took one was my Senior year in high school. I even slept through two of my favorite shows, Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill. That's when you know something's wrong with me. LOL. When I woke up, we went to the theater to see the new Dr.Seuss movie, The Lorax. A couple of our family friends met up with us, which was cool. It was a really cute movie, and I loved the message behind it, "It's not about the seed, it's about what you do with it." That's something we could all learn from it, and if/when you see it, then you'll understand it completely.

Last night was the first Sunday night I had been home in awhile. I decided not to go to Bible study since I had gone on Friday, and I was just not up for it. Instead, I went to California Pizza Kitchen with my parents which was fun. We came home and watched The Wonder Years together, and my cat (who used to really not like me) kept jumping on me and cuddling with me. CRAZY! I've really grown to love that cat.

When 11:00 rolled around, I was still ready for bed even with the nap. I turned on a episode of One Tree Hill and was out. Despite some of the events of the weekend, it was really great. I'm learning that it's important to find the silver lining of everything, because you'll be a lot better off for it.

That's all for now,
Shelby

I woke up this morning to a text from Febe, asking if I wanted to get out of town for the next day and a half with the girls and go to the mountains. I worked some things out and will be able to! What a wonderful start to the week. Hope all of you have a great week! :) Make it count.

Graduation Day

"Someone once said that death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside
us while we live."

Uncle Bud,
You were truly a man of God who showed love to everyone you came in contact with. You lived with a purpose; you took risks and lived life to the fullest! You showed us how to give of our time and to help others, and to believe in the best of people because they can surprise us.You didn't let life live you, you lived life. The way you loved Aunt Shirley allowed all of us to see that true love exists and 68 years later you were still going strong; You treated her like a queen and as if she was the only girl in the room, even up until the very last days of your life. You have inspired so many people, including myself. I am so blessed to have known such a wonderful man. We all love you and will miss you greatly. <3

I didn't get to know him very well, but I do have several great memories of him. I remember going to their cabin in Bass Lake when I really young with my parents and grandparents. I went fishing, we rode the sea do's and just spent time together. It was really beautiful up there! One thing that has always stuck out to me about that trip is when I went out on the boat with Uncle Bud and my dad, because my uncle wanted to take some food out to some people across the lake. I just remember my dad telling me that even though Uncle Bud was a wealthy man, he always gave back to others. And he did. I also remember him buying me a Ruben Studdard bear one time when they came out to visit. He was a man who put others before himself.

Uncle Bud looked at death as graduation day; when you leave this earth, you've done everything you could for God's glory and then you have a homecoming celebration when you go back to Heaven. I like that idea much better. Everything on earth here is just temporary and when we live with eternity in mind, we'll be a lot better off.

This was the last time I saw him, two years ago! Such a great day!
There was an episode (or a few) of One Tree Hill that dealt with the subject of death. They were right when they said there's nothing romantic about it, because there isn't. You see it in the movies and think 'wow! It's poetic and inspiring and you can pull a lot from it.' And I guess the emotions you feel can be, but death itself is not. It's loss, it's pain, it's emptiness, and it's lonely. It's inevitable, but something that none of us want to experience in our lifetime. No matter how many times you go through it, it doesn't get easier and you never stop missing them.

I guess you should consider yourself lucky when you miss someone, because at least you had someone worth missing in the first place (OTH). As hard as that is when you're grieving, it's true. Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all. In those hard moments, you can hold onto all the wonderful memories you had together and that will get you through the pain of missing them.

That's all for now,
Shelby
